DUAL CITIZENSHIP IN MEXICO

TRAVEL TO MEXICO AS A DUAL CITIZEN!
If you, or one of your parents, were born in Mexico, you are eligible to become a Mexican national. Or, if you live in Mexico for five continuous years, you can obtain Mexican citizenship. U.S. Immigration  and Naturalization law allows dual citizenship and will not take away your American citizenship when you become a citizen of Mexico.

There are two terms that are important to this issue:  residency and citizenship.  As a “resident” you have the right to reside, or live, in a particular country.  Citizenship in that country is not the question – you merely reside there.

However, if you find that Mexico will become your permanent home, it is to your advantage to obtain dual citizenship.  Your rights, especially when it comes to property ownership, are greatly extended as a citizen, especially if you want to live near the beach.

After living in Mexico for five years, you can obtain a citizenship application and take a citizenship test.  Or, if you choose, you can continue living there under your FM-2 visa as a resident.  The choice is yours.

If you choose to become a citizen of Mexico, your U.S. citizenship still stands. The American government isn’t interested in WHERE you live as long as you file a U.S. tax return! You will be a resident of Mexico, and a citizen of the U.S.

There are benefits to obtaining citizenship in Mexico, one of them being that you will not have to relinquish your American citizenship.

As a citizen of Mexico, you will be eligible for all the benefits available to Mexican citizens, including a college education.

An American will not have to give up his Social Security.

Benefits:

  • You can own land near the border or beach, without having to go through a trust.
  • You don't have to renew your Visa annually.
  • Attendance in public schools and universities is a right of a Mexican citizen.
  • You can hold certain jobs or own a business that may have a Mexican-citizen only designation.
  • You will be able to vote, and will hold a Mexican voting card, which is an excellent piece of identification when working with governmental offices.
  • You can hold political office.

Limitations:

  • A Mexican citizen cannot legally own a vehicle that has foreign license plates. You will have to choose between your beloved automobile and your country of citizenship.

To obtain Mexican citizenship, you must know Spanish, know Mexican history, and have assimilated into the Mexican lifestyle.  You will have to take an exam in Spanish.
