PETS IN ITALY

Bringing a pet to Italy isn’t much different than in any other EU country.
Italy welcomes your pets, as long as you comply with the EU Community guidelines.

If you are bringing your pet from the UK:
Fido will need a Certificate of Health issued by a vet who is registered with
the ministry of Agriculture in the UK.  These are known as DEFRA-registered
vets.  The vet will issue your pet a “pet passport” and you will be allowed to
travel with your pet.

Be sure to check with your airline regarding their pet regulations if you plan to enter Italy with your pet via air.

If you are bringing your pet from the U.S.:
It is necessary to obtain the European Community Veterinary Certificate
for each pet you are bringing with you. The certificate will attest to the facts that:
Your pet has been micro-chipped or tattooed, with your name and contact information.
Your pet has had a valid vaccination against rabies.
Check with your vet as to the amount of time that must elapse between the animal receiving a rabies shot and entering the new country.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has an extensive website devoted to the regulations regarding transporting pets overseas.  You can connect via:

Be sure you check with your airline as to traveling with your pet when you
make that final trip from home to Italy.  In many countries, importing your pet is only possible via a particular airport, one that is equipped to handle and process the paperwork.
