Retire around the world

The good news is that Italy has probably the best mobile networks and service in the world.  They are efficient, extremely economical and easy to use.  Buy a cell phone account while there and access it with pre-paid cards.  In the rare instance that your phone’s SIM will not accommodate the Italian SIM, you may have to purchase an Italian mobile phone.

The internet is widespread and cyber cafes are in every town and village.  The advent of international terrorism has forced Italian internet cafes to now require identification from anyone logging on.  A passport will suffice if you are a visitor, and it will be photocopied.  Your time of arrival and departure will be logged, and if you are using a public computer, that information will be attached to your identification trail.  They will also track what websites you visit.

Telecom Italia, which is the national telephone service, provides the land lines in Italy.  They also offer internet services. Telephone and internet services are deregulated, so you are free to choose other providers.  Your neighbors are your best referral sources.
