TRAVEL TO MEXICO:
OAXACA!

With no pre-determined “expat” settlements intact, Oaxaca, Mexico prides itself on its integration of residents. This doesn’t mean that other English speakers are not throughout the town. One visit to the American Library will dispel that myth.
It has been reported that over 300 people live in Mexico who are not native to the country. These are expats from North America, Europe and elsewhere who have chosen this town for their A Change of Lifestyle experience.
The cost of living in Oaxaca is less than in the more developed locations we have covered. There isn't a beach. But there are wonderfully carved hills and mountains where the scenery is breathtaking. Inland, Oaxaca boasts that over 300 days of the year include sunshine!
Those who have discovered Oaxaca are tuned in to the arts. They are writers. Artists. Musicians. They have found a community that doesn't boast of gates and security guards, but instead reflects what a village lifestyle should be. A neighborhood.
Located east of Acapulco, Oaxaca is the home of the acclaimed Mexican modern painter, Rufino Tamayo. Boasting an abundance of artisans congregating in the villages surrounding Oaxaca, distinctive woven rugs and San Bartolo black pottery are just a few of the crafts that can be found locally.
Another source of pride for the Oaxacan is its food. Gourmet cookbooks abound with recipes originating from the area, with Oaxacan chocolate and mescal tequila prime ingredients. An annual food festival, the Food of the Gods, is held every October.
Near to Oaxaca and steeped in history is Monte Alban, reported to have been founded before 500 BC. Overlooking Oaxaca, this Zapotec plateau was carved out of the top of a mountain and features observatories, palaces, pyramids and even ball courts.
Historic neighborhoods flank Oaxaca and offer a purely Mexican lifestyle, while also welcoming new residents. Oaxaca will fulfill the longings of adventurers while also comforting them with brilliant music, fabulous food, and a friendly atmosphere.
