   LEARNING SPANISH!

LEARN SPANISH

As a matter of courtesy, and to enhance your learning and living experience while in Panama, it is recommended that you start Spanish language classes soon after you’ve made your decision to explore and settle in the country.

The official language of Panama is Spanish.  English is the most common second language spoken in the country.   It is to your advantage to learn Spanish as you want to be able to understand as much as you can.  Dealing with utility suppliers, small merchants, and just about anyone outside of Panama City is much easier when you adapt to their method of communication.  They will also respect your attempt and make the transaction much easier.

You can start by learning Spanish before you travel.  Just be sure that the person tutoring you is from Panama – preferably Panama City.  There is a difference in the dialects between Mexico, Central America and the country of Panama.  The northern coast of Panama, originally settled by Jamaicans, has its own dialect, while in Panama City, the dialect spoken is closer to Puerto Rican Spanish mixed with English words.

Choose your tutor carefully, but DO learn Spanish.  And once you get settled in Panama, take advantage of the language classes offered in the local schools and universities.
