USING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
FOR TRAVEL IN MEXICO

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION MEXICO

Taxis
Taxis in Mexico are a main form of transportation for natives as well as expats.  They are easy to find and all it takes is raising your arm and one will stop.  Be sure to follow these guidelines before getting into a taxi:

  • Be sure the name of the company is written on the side of the car in a professional manner.  All official taxis are assigned a number and it is prudent to note that number before getting in.  If the car doesn’t have a number it is not legitimate.  As in the U.S., gypsy cabs are everywhere, and it is not recommended that you take them if you want to be assured of a fair rate.
  • Ask the price of the trip before getting in.  Unless you have taken taxis before it will be hard to gauge what is accurate, but don’t be afraid to negotiate.  $3.00 to $4.00 is a fair price range.
  • Tipping the driver is not customary in Mexico.
  • Be sure you carry small change and small bills.  Many drivers will tell you they do not have change in hopes that you will tell them to keep the difference.  Carrying smaller denominations will benefit you in the long run.
  • Taking a taxi directly outside a bus station will usually cost a few pesos more than walking around the corner and hailing one from the street.  Convenience comes with a price.
  • You can order a taxi ahead of time.
  • Only get into a taxi if one person (the driver) is in the front seat.

InnerCity Buses:
Buses are the most popular form of public transportation in Mexico.

  • You can access the different companies and routes at the site below:

  • Buses are economical, with a trip from the airport to your outlying town ranging from $3.00 to $25.00.  Some even offer food service.

Intracity Buses
Buses are private in Mexico so the organization of routes, schedules and bus stops is more haphazard than in cities where they are part of the infrastructure.  But one of the best ways to explore a city is by bus.  Just hop on and get off in a neighborhood that intrigues you!  Schedules aren’t existent so ask a local to guide you to the bus that will take you where you want to go.

  • Look for gathering crowds.  Those will more than likely indicate a bus stop.  Raising your arm as if you are hailing a taxi will probably result in a bus stopping for you.
  • Carry change for the fare, which runs less than 5 pesos.
  • Sit near the front if possible, and ask the bus driver to alert you to a specific destination.
  • If you have ever ridden in a New York City subway, you’re used to the entertainment that comes with the ride.  The same holds for Mexican public transportation.  Entertainers will frequently board, hoping to earn a few pesos.  Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show, and be sure to reward them with a few pesos.  It’s all part of the delightful Mexican experience.
