                            SAN SEBASTIAN
ANDALUCIA AND THE COSTA DEL SOL

For many of us, our introduction to Spain came when we saw or read about the chivalrous Man from LaMancha, Don Quixote, riding valiantly across the central Spanish hills with his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, tilting at windmills, seeking glory and adventure, and placing the beautiful Dolcinea on a pedestal she never expected.  Perhaps a tune from the well-loved American musical is playing in your head even now!

Spain is a country that evokes chivalry: dashing men, fiery women, fabulous food, delicious wine and the climate and topography from which to enjoy all the splendors of an environment that is one of the most easily adapted to!

Spain has attracted so many expatriates that an estimated 3.8 million people, or 12% of Spain’s population, come from foreign shores!  Americans constitute nearly 100,000 of the Spanish population, making Spain the 4th most popular country in Europe for Americans. As for the British, there are so many Brits in Spain that on the Costa del Sol, for instance, chip shops outnumber the tapas bars!

The sun plays a vital part in luring people to the shores of Spain, and beach communities along the coastline are bursting with shops catering to the British, German and American population that now calls Spain home. And concrete takes on another meaning when looking at the wall-to-wall high-rise towers of condos and apartments lining the beaches.

What is it about Spain that makes it so attractive?  There isn’t just one answer, but many.  Spain’s economy is one of the most prosperous in Europe, and its unemployment figures are the second lowest in Europe.  The job market is highly attractive to Western Europeans and the need for skilled manpower is high as Spain competes in the global economy of this new century. It has been reported that 50% of the new jobs created within the EU originate in Spain.

If working is not a prerequisite for moving to Spain, then the lifestyle is what will attract you.  Life in Spain is still relatively inexpensive and it is not difficult to obtain the residency visas necessary for relocation.  If you want a beach lifestyle, Spain offers the bustling Costas of the Mediterranean to the south, or the tranquil stretches of Atlantic -rimmed beaches in the north.

Skiing in the Pyrenees or hiking the dramatic Sierra Nevada mountain range, hillsides lush with vineyards or groves of citrus and olive trees, and meandering roads wrapping up and down hillsides are all within Spain.  Medieval castles and whitewashed villas dot the interior of this historic country, and all represent a tranquility of life that can be experienced when living in Spain.

The cities of Spain are so electric that they issue their own high voltage energy!  Barcelona, painted with Gaudi-designed architecture on almost every corner, is a 24-hour a day lifestyle that merges the best of continental Europe.  Madrid is stately, and a center for art and culture.  In the South, the Moorish influences in Seville and Granada bring a dimension to Spanish life that rings with history. While along the Northern reaches of Spain, the Basque country boasts the incredible Geary-designed museum in Bilbao while San Sebastian evokes the lifestyle of the Royals.

The weather in Spain is glorious, the Spanish people fiercely proud of their country and glad to welcome you, the food is fresh, healthy, and purely Mediterranean, and the wine brilliant, whether it is from the famed Rijoa vineyards, or simply a pitcher of fruit-laced sangria occupying a place of honor on your table.

Did we mention golf?  Spain boasts many of the world’s best golf courses!

How about art?  The town of Figueres, on the northern coast of Spain rimming the Mediterranean, is the home of Salvador Dali and houses one of three Dali Museums, while Málaga in the south gave us Pablo Picasso.  Museums featuring Picasso’s art are found throughout Spain, including the Museo Picasso Málaga and the Museu Picasso in Barcelona.

The people of Spain are friendly and full of life.  They love their food and their wine, their flamenco dancers and bullfighters, and have a zest for life that is infectious.  They will welcome you and do their best to encourage you to experience a lifestyle that is to be enjoyed.  Spain typifies A Change of Lifestyle that is one of the best Europe has to offer!
