USING CREDIT CARDS
IN THAILAND

ATM machines are throughout Thailand and getting Baht is usually not a problem. Be prepared, however, for ATM’s that only speak and write Thai!

Visa and Master Card are the main cards accepted for withdrawals and purchases, but American Express and Discover are accepted in many of the major resorts and stores.  Be sure your card carries the Cirrus logo as it is the most widely accepted ATM card in Thailand.

Some vendors will try to assess you the credit card fee, plus some,  if you want to pay with the card. It’s always wise to carry cash with you in case you run into this situation.  If you are in a village or city center, you can always go to a local ATM, withdraw the cash, and return to make your purchase.

If you do pay by credit card, be sure to write “paid in Baht” on the receipt, next to the total.

Opening a bank account in Thailand does not guarantee that you will receive an ATM card associated with that account.  You will need a work permit for that, so be sure you get a card from your local bank before coming to Thailand. ALSO:  make sure your pin code is only four numbers long as many ATMs do not recognize codes longer than four numerals.
